The attending physician adjusted the patient’s chart with a calm professionalism that contrasted sharply with the tension in the room.
“This is Mara Ellis,” he said.
The name meant nothing to Daniel. But it clearly meant something to Vanessa.
Because the moment she heard it, her entire composure fractured.
Her breathing became uneven. Her fingers clenched tightly around her purse strap. She took a step backward as if the bed itself had become dangerous.
Daniel’s instincts sharpened.
“Vanessa,” he said more firmly, “what is going on?”
“I told you,” she replied too quickly. “I don’t know her.”
But the denial came out wrong—too rehearsed, too immediate, too desperate.
The doctor glanced between them with growing unease, then added something that made the air in the room feel suddenly heavier.
“Before she lost consciousness,” he said, checking the chart again, “the patient kept repeating one name over and over.”
Daniel’s pulse slowed.
“What name?” he asked.
