While I Emptied My Mother-in-Law’s Bedpan, My Husband Took His Widowed Sister-in-Law to Hawaii on the Tickets Meant for Me and Our Son—Then I Pulled His Bank Records

PART 1: THE HAWAIIAN BETRAYAL

I had just finished emptying my mother-in-law’s bedpan for the fifth time that day when my phone screen lit up with a notification. My sister-in-law, Chloe, had just posted a new photo album with nine pictures.

Location: Maui, Hawaii.

Caption: New Year’s company trip! Perks of having family. ❤️

I froze, my pupils dilating as I tapped open the album. Right there, in the center of the photos, was my husband, David. He was holding Chloe’s son, Leo, grinning from ear to ear, forming a heart shape with his hands toward the camera.

Coming back to my senses, I instinctively forwarded the post to David. Looking at the screen full of their little staged family moments, I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh and was about to unsend the message.

Suddenly, my phone rang. David’s panicked voice came through the speaker. “Elena, don’t misunderstand. It’s not what you think. Leo has never been on a real vacation, and he really wanted to go.”

The company’s New Year’s trip allowed employees to bring family members. Those spots were supposed to belong to me and our son. Yet, David had secretly brought his widowed sister-in-law and nephew, leaving me behind like an absolute fool, spending my days and nights in a sterile hospital room caring for his bedridden mother. Our own son, Mason, had never been to Hawaii either.

I cut him off, my voice turning to ice. “If you brought them, then you can stay with them permanently.”

David paused, then his tone shifted into anger. “Elena, what kind of nonsense are you spouting? Chloe has had it rough raising a kid on her own all these years. I’m just—”

“I’m just what?” I snapped. “Your mother is asleep in a hospital bed, and I’m wiping her down! You think my life is easy? I raise our child, take care of your elderly mother, and spend my holidays practically living in a hospital ward!”

David raised his voice. “I asked you first! You were the one who said you didn’t want to go!”

I only said that because his mother had suddenly fallen severely ill. I was afraid he’d feel guilty leaving her, but I never expected him to use my sacrifice as a weapon to blame me.

“David, do you have no conscience?” I yelled. “Even if I couldn’t go, you shouldn’t have brought an outsider!”

“Chloe and Leo aren’t outsiders!” he retorted sharply. “They are family!”

I stood there, stunned. Family. What great teamwork.

“David, do you even remember whose husband you are?!” I shouted.

My sudden outburst startled my mother-in-law, waking her up. At the same time, from David’s end of the line, I heard Chloe’s soft, sweet voice. “What are you doing over here? Leo is calling for you.”

“Yeah, I’m coming,” David replied softly to her. Then, his voice turned cold as he addressed me again. “You are being completely unreasonable. I have things to do. I’m hanging up.”

The line went dead. In that moment, it felt like my heart plunged into a frozen abyss.

My mother-in-law, Helen, groaned from the bed. “Who were you screaming at on the phone?”

I didn’t even look up. “Your son.”

Helen frowned. “Isn’t he on a company trip? What did he do to make you so angry?”

I opened Chloe’s social media, walked over, and shoved the phone in her face. “Take a look. He took Chloe and her son to Hawaii for a luxury vacation. Am I not allowed to be angry?”

Helen squinted at the screen, and to my absolute shock, a smile spread across her face. “Well, that’s nice. What are you throwing a fit for?”

I stared at her, completely dumbfounded. It took me a moment to find my voice. “Mom, your oldest son took his sister-in-law and nephew on a romantic-looking vacation. You think this is normal?!”

She rolled her eyes, completely unfazed. “It’s not just the three of them, it’s a company trip. Plus, the extra tickets would have gone to waste anyway.”

An indescribable chill washed over me. She knew. She had known all along, and I was the only one kept in the dark. For days, I had lost sleep caring for her—feeding her, sponge-bathing her, emptying her bedpans—treating it all as my duty. Yet, all my blood, sweat, and tears couldn’t even compare to a few vacation photos from her precious younger daughter-in-law.

Seeing my silence, Helen continued to lecture me. “You are the older sister-in-law. Stop being so petty. Ben died young. It’s rare for David to have a chance to take them out to see the world.”

My face flushed with sheer rage. “This isn’t about being petty! He took another woman and her child on vacation! How do you think his coworkers are going to look at this?!”

Helen scoffed, absolutely shameless. “Let people think whatever they want.”

My phone buzzed again. Another update from Chloe. Nine more sweet, warm photos.

I gripped my phone, grabbed my large tote bag, and walked briskly toward the door. Why should they get to enjoy the ocean breeze while I break my back caring for a sick old woman? I wasn’t that stupid.

I marched straight to the nurse’s station and hired a full-time, professional caregiver for Helen out of my own pocket. Then, I drove home, packed a suitcase, and decided to take my son on a road trip.

After packing, I drove to my parents’ house to pick up Mason, who had been staying there while I was in the hospital.

My mom looked surprised. “Why the sudden road trip? Is Helen discharged?”

Afraid of worrying her, I forced a smile. “Not yet, Mom. But I hired a nurse. It’s the holidays, I can’t just rot in a hospital room.”

I brought both my parents and my son along, driving straight toward Charleston, South Carolina—a historic, coastal city I had wanted to visit for years. Every time a holiday rolled around, David always claimed he was “too busy with overtime” to take me.

During the drive, my phone rang incessantly. I knew exactly what was happening: the hired nurse had arrived, Helen had instantly complained to David, and now he was calling to interrogate me.

I hit ‘Decline’ over and over.

When we stopped at a rest area, the phone rang again. I thought you were busy playing family man, I thought bitterly, finally answering.

“How could you just dump my mother with a stranger?!” David roared into the phone. “Do you know she hasn’t even eaten lunch yet?!”

I snapped back, “If you, her own flesh and blood, can be out frolicking on a beach, why should I play the fool and serve her hand and foot?”

He was choked by my words. A moment later, he muttered, “I told you, I had urgent company business. I couldn’t get away.”

I let out a cold laugh. “I think the only thing you couldn’t get away from was your sister-in-law.”

David froze, then his tone turned defensive. “Elena, why are you being so vicious lately? I explained it to you. There is nothing going on between me and Chloe.”

“Is that right?” I said flatly. “I suggest you take a closer look at her social media.”

He answered a little too quickly. “Whatever she posts is just her personal feelings. It doesn’t mean anything.”

So he had already seen it. He saw those ambiguous, intimate captions and just dismissed them as “personal feelings.” He didn’t even care that she publicly claimed him as her “family.”

“If that’s all, I’m hanging up,” I said.

“Wait, where are you right now? Why haven’t you been answering my calls?”

“On a road trip. And it’s none of your business.”
