THE FIANCÉE CRIED BESIDE HIS MOTHER’S BODY — THEN THE SECURITY FOOTAGE SHOWED WHAT SHE REALLY DID
PART 3: Victoria’s Perfect Mask Fell Apart
The ambulance took Evelyn away while police took Victoria into custody.
Julian followed his mother to the hospital, still wearing the bloodless expression of a man whose life had split into before and after. He sat beside Evelyn’s bed all night, holding her hand as doctors explained the injuries, the surgery, the uncertainty. She was alive. That was the only sentence he could hold onto.
By morning, the Cross mansion was no longer a private family estate. It was a crime scene.
Investigators found more than the footage. They found messages Victoria had sent to a friend about Evelyn being “the last obstacle.” They found searches about inheritance timing, power of attorney, and whether marriage could override trust restrictions. They found drafts of emails meant to make Evelyn look mentally unstable if she publicly opposed the wedding.
Julian read the evidence with numb horror.
Victoria had not loved him.
She had studied him.
She had learned his loneliness, his grief over his father’s death, his desire to build a family, and she had turned all of it into a ladder. Evelyn had seen it because mothers often recognize predators before sons recognize manipulation.
When Evelyn finally woke three days later, Julian broke down beside her bed.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have believed you.”
Evelyn’s voice was weak, but steady. “You wanted to see good in her.”
“I almost lost you because of it.”
She squeezed his hand. “Then don’t waste the lesson.”
