Ruth looked at the document. She didn’t pick it up. Everyone in the room turned. He was standing with his arms at his sides and an expression on his face that was not quite anger but was adjacent to it.

“You don’t have to sign that right now.” Mr. Greer drove out in the rain, Ruth said calmly. “It’s his job.” “It’s not right,” Dean said. Ruth looked at him for a moment.

“I don’t need rescue,” she said. “I need a pen.” Greer produced the pen.
Ruth signed.

He drove away and Ruth went back to the last bike and the sound of her wrench on the engine casing resumed as if nothing had changed. But something in the garage had shifted.
