My Wife Said She Wanted to be Alone. I Decided Not to Talk to Her Anymore

every document, every flash drive, every piece of paper. We need to build a case against him before he destroys you.

Ashley started crying. Ryan, I’m so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen. I know, but right now, we need to focus on keeping you out of prison.

The next morning, Ashley and I sat in the conference room with Marcus and our company’s legal team. She turned over everything Dererick had given her, including detailed plans for accessing client accounts and transferring funds to offshore accounts. He told me it was for a legitimate investment opportunity, Ashley explained through tears. He said he needed the account information to verify our company’s credibility with potential investors. Within hours, we had enough evidence to turn Derek over to the FBI. He was arrested that afternoon, and the investigation revealed he’d been running similar scams in three other states. Ashley kept her job, but our marriage was still over.

Saving her from prison didn’t erase the months of lies and betrayal. The divorce was finalized 6 months later. Ashley and I split our assets evenly, and she moved to Atlanta to be closer to her sister.

Derek was sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy. I kept the house but sold most of the furniture. Too many memories attached to everything. I wanted a fresh start and that meant getting rid of anything that reminded me of the life Ashley and I had built together. The drinking was behind me.

Dr. Reeves had helped me understand that Ashley’s betrayal wasn’t a reflection of my worth as a man or a husband. Some people are just broken in ways that make them incapable of honest relationships.

You can’t fix someone who doesn’t want to be fixed, Dr. Reeves told me during one of her sessions. And you can’t love someone into being trustworthy. Work became my focus. I threw myself into rebuilding my professional reputation and earned a promotion to senior financial director. The company valued my loyalty and the way I’d handled the Derek situation. Trust once lost in my personal life was being rebuilt in my career. 6 months after the divorce, I started dating again. Nothing serious, just dinner with women who appreciated honesty and direct communication. It felt good to have conversations without wondering what wasn’t being said. I ran into Ashley at a coffee shop in Charlotte about a year later. She was visiting for a friend’s wedding and looked different, older, more tired, but somehow more honest than she’d been in years. “How are you doing?” she asked. I could tell she genuinely wanted to know.

“Good. Really good, actually. You better. Therapy helps. And being away from Dererick’s influence helped me realize how far off track I’d gotten.

I’m glad you’re doing better, Ashley.

Ryan, I owe you an apology. Not just for the affair or the money, but for taking you for granted. You deserved better than what I gave you. Yes, I did. But I learned something important from all this. What’s that? I’ll learn that I’m stronger than I thought, and that I won’t settle for anything less than complete honesty in a relationship.

Ashley nodded. You’ll find someone who appreciates that. I already have, I said, thinking about Sarah, the bank auditor I’ve been seeing for the past 3 months. Take care of yourself, Ashley.

As I walked away, I realized I felt nothing for my ex-wife except mild pity.
