“My Parents Think You’re A Downgrade From My Ex. I Don’t Want To Make Them Uncomfortable,” She Said After I Asked Why I Wasn’t Invited To Her Sister’s Wedding. I Said, “I See,” And Let It Go. Packed My Things And Left While She Was At The Wedding. A Few Hours Later, Her Father Called Me Confused.

Part 3

Claire showed up at my new apartment two days later. I had not given her the address, which meant she had asked around until someone slipped. That alone told me she was more resourceful when losing control than when defending me.

She stood outside my door with red eyes and perfect hair.

“We need to talk.”

I stepped into the hallway, closing the door behind me.

“Talk.”

Her face tightened.

“You’re not even going to let me in?”

“No.”

“That’s cold.”

“Claire.”

She swallowed.

“I said something stupid.”

“You repeated your parents’ judgment and asked me to accommodate it.”

“I was stressed.”

“You were folding towels.”

She looked away.

Then came the apology tour, but every stop had a toll booth. She was sorry if I felt excluded. She was sorry that her family was old-fashioned. She was sorry the timing hurt me. She was sorry I misunderstood how much pressure she was under.

I waited for the sentence that never came: I was wrong.

Finally,

I said, “Would you have married me if your parents never approved?”

Her silence answered first.

“Evan—”

“Would you?”

“I wanted them to come around.”

“That is not an answer.”

She wiped her cheek.

“I didn’t want to choose.”

“You did choose.”

Her father called while she was still standing there. She looked at the phone, then at me.

“Answer it,” I said.

She put it on speaker, maybe thinking he would help. He did not.

“Claire,”

he said, voice heavy,

“your mother and I need to understand something. Did you tell Evan we thought he was a downgrade?”

She closed her eyes.

“Claire.”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“And did you leave him off the invitation for that reason?”

“I was trying to avoid conflict.”

Her father exhaled.

“You created it.”

I saw her flinch.

He continued, “For what it’s worth, I was wrong to compare him to Brendan. But you were worse. You let a good man believe he had no place beside you.”

Claire whispered, “Dad, please.”

“No. Your sister cried because she realized the empty seat at her wedding was not because Evan had work. It was because you were ashamed of him.”

The call ended with Claire crying in the hallway.

I did not feel victorious. I felt tired.
