My Mother Abandoned Me and My Father Because the Doctor Said He’d Be Crippled for Life

The entire lounge fell silent. Even William was speechless, his eyes wide with surprise. Cynthia stared at the ring, her heart pounding. She admired Nicholas’s courage and loved Juliet deeply, but uncertainty filled her mind.

“Nicholas,” she whispered, “this is a big step. I care about you and about Juliet, but are you sure we’re ready for this? I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep.” Nicholas’s smile faltered, but he nodded slowly. “I understand, Cynthia.  Take your time. I’ll wait, no matter how long it takes.” Cynthia’s hesitation hung in the air.

Nicholas remained kneeling, vulnerable, his heart suspended between hope and heartbreak. A week later, Nancy sat on the couch, scrolling through her phone with a mischievous smile.

Sharon walked in, holding a bowl of popcorn. “Nancy, why are you smiling like that?”  Sharon asked, tossing a piece of popcorn into her mouth. Nancy burst into laughter,  holding up her phone. “Sharon, you won’t believe this. Austin dumped Agnes.

She’s back to being all alone.” Sharon’s eyes widened in excitement.

“Ah, I said it. That girl thought she could win. Didn’t I tell you? Austin can never stay with one woman. It’s just his nature.” Nancy leaned closer, lowering her voice as if sharing a juicy secret.

“After what Agnes did to Nicholas, I knew her day would come. Karma never misses.” Sharon clapped her hands in mock celebration. “Exactly. She deserves every bit of it.

I just hope she learns her lesson.” They both burst into laughter, tears rolling down their cheeks, unaware that their own lives were about to be shaken by chaos they couldn’t yet see.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Cynthia and Nicholas sat together on the balcony, gazing at the city lights. The night air was calm,  but Cynthia’s heart was racing. She held a mug of tea tightly, glancing at Nicholas. “Nicholas,” she began quietly, her voice trembling slightly, “there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.”  Nicholas set down his drink and looked at her, worried. “What is it, Cynthia?” She hesitated for a moment, then smiled softly. “I’ve had time to think about your proposal, and my answer is yes.

I’ll marry you.”  Nicholas’s eyes lit up. He reached across the table and took her hands.

“Cynthia, you don’t know how much this means to me. You’ve made me the happiest man alive.” Cynthia chuckled gently. “Well, I hope you’re ready for a lifetime of my stubbornness.” Nicholas laughed. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” A week later, they traveled to Cynthia’s hometown for the marriage rites. Her family welcomed Nicholas warmly, grateful for his kindness and for the way he loved Cynthia. The ceremony was simple but beautiful, filled with laughter, prayers, and blessings. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for both of them. A month after the wedding,  Cynthia and Juliet sat together on the couch, flipping through a picture book.

Juliet was unusually quiet, her little fingers tracing the pages absentmindedly. Cynthia noticed and turned her head. “Juliet,  are you okay? You’ve been very quiet today.” Juliet hesitated, then looked up with big curious eyes. “Auntie Cynthia,”  she said softly. “Yes, my dear.” Cynthia replied with a gentle smile, setting the book aside.

Juliet fidgeted with the hem of her dress. “Can I Can I call you Mommy now?” Cynthia froze for a second, emotion washing over her. She felt a lump rise in her throat, but quickly composed herself.

She reached out and cupped Juliet’s cheeks. “Oh, my sweet girl,” she said warmly, “I would love nothing more than for you to call me Mommy.” Juliet’s face lit up with pure joy.

She threw her arms around Cynthia. “I love you, Mommy,” she whispered. Tears welled up in Cynthia’s eyes as she hugged the little girl tightly. “I love you, too, Juliet, more than you’ll ever know.” From the doorway, Nicholas had been watching quietly. He smiled, his heart full, and stepped into the room.

Wrapping  his arms around both of them, he whispered, “We are family now, and nothing will ever change that.” Juliet looked up at him with a bright smile.

“Does this mean I have two Mommies? My first Mommy and you, Mommy Cynthia.” Cynthia nodded softly. “That’s right, my love, and I promise to always love you and take care of you, just like your first Mommy would want.” Juliet settled happily between them,  feeling safe and loved, truly loved, for the first time in a long while. The house felt whole again. A few days later, Nicholas was away on a business trip, staying in a hotel to finalize a major deal. But unknown to him, fate was already preparing another twist, one that would soon test everything he had rebuilt. The next day, his phone rang.

Cynthia’s voice came through, calm but thoughtful. “Babe,  I need favor.” He smiled faintly. “Tell me.” She took a slow breath. “An old friend of mine called yesterday, Ada.  We were very close back in college.

She’s been through a lot. She lost her husband and only child in an accident, and now she’s struggling to find a place to stay.

She just needs somewhere quiet to heal and get back on her feet.

She’s not coming right away,  probably next month, but I wanted to ask if it’s okay for her to stay with us for a while when she arrives.” Nicholas was quiet for a moment, then said calmly, “My love, I trust  you. If you believe it’s the right thing to do, then I’m fine with it.” Her tone softened with relief. “Thank you.

I didn’t want to make any decisions without talking to you first.” “You don’t need to thank me,” Nicholas replied.  “We are a team. I know you wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.” After the call, Cynthia smiled softly, grateful for Nicholas’s love and understanding. But what she didn’t know was that her simple request had already set destiny in motion, and soon it would test their love in ways she never imagined.

It was Saturday morning, the first weekend since Nicholas returned home. He seemed unusually happy as he finished his coffee and hummed softly to himself.

Cynthia was scrolling through her phone when Nicholas suddenly walked up to her, excitement shining in his eyes. “Babe,” he said, taking her hand, “drop everything.

I need you to get ready.” Cynthia looked at him, confused. “Get ready for what?” Nicholas smiled playfully. “It’s a surprise. Trust me, you’ll love it. Just grab your bag and let’s go.”  Still puzzled but curious, Cynthia smiled and went to change. 30 minutes later, they were on the road, driving through a quiet part of town Cynthia had never been to before. The streets were lined with tall trees and beautiful houses. “Nicholas, where are we going?” she  asked, peering through the window. He laughed softly. “Patience, my love. You’ll see soon.” Finally,  they stopped in front of a big gated compound. Behind the tall fence stood a large, beautiful house surrounded by green lawns and flowers.

Cynthia’s eyes widened in surprise.

“Nicholas,  what is this place?” He got out of the car, opened her door, and said with a smile, “Come and see.” As they walked closer, the gate opened,  revealing the stunning house in full view. Cynthia gasped. “This is so beautiful, but why are we here?” Nicholas smiled warmly. “Because this is our new home.” Cynthia froze.  “Our new home? Are you serious?” He nodded proudly. “Yes, I’ve been working on a big contract, and it finally paid off. I wanted to surprise you and Juliet. You both deserve the best, a fresh start for our family.” Tears filled Cynthia’s eyes. “Nicholas,  I don’t even know what to say. This is more than I ever dreamed of.” He held her tightly. “Just say you’re happy. That’s all I want.” “I’m more than happy,” she said,  her voice shaking with emotion. “I’m grateful. Thank you, Nicholas. I love you.” He smiled and whispered, “I love you, too.”  As they stood together in front of their new home, Cynthia felt pure joy and hope for the future. But  she had no idea the greatest test of their love was only just beginning. A week later, Agnes stood outside a beautiful house, the address Cynthia had sent her. She looked around in disbelief. The house was large, elegant, and surrounded by perfectly trimmed hedges.

“This can’t be the right place,” Agnes murmured to herself. “How could Cynthia live here? Did I mix up the address?” She pulled out her phone and dialed Cynthia’s number. “Hello, Cynthia.

I think there’s a mistake,” Agnes said nervously. “I’m standing at the address you sent me, but I think it’s wrong.” Cynthia laughed lightly on the other end. “No mistake, Agnes. That’s the house. Come on in.” Agnes hung up slowly, still unsure. She took a deep breath, walked to the front door, and knocked softly. Moments later, the door opened, and Cynthia appeared with a bright smile. “Agnes, welcome,” she said warmly, pulling her old friend into a hug. Agnes managed a weak smile.

“Cynthia, this house is beautiful. You didn’t tell me you moved.”  “We just settled in last week.” Cynthia replied cheerfully. “Come in. Let me show you around.” Agnes followed her through the house, admiring the decorations and the cozy feel of the place. But as they entered the living room, Agnes froze. Sitting by the window was Nicholas. The moment his eyes met his, his expression hardened.

“Agnes.” He said in a low, sharp voice.

“So,  we meet again.” Agnes’s face drained of color. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. Cynthia looked between them, confused. “Wait, you two know each other?” Nicholas stood up, his voice steady but cold. “Know each other? Cynthia,  this is my ex-wife. The woman I told you about.” Cynthia’s eyes widened in shock.

“What? Agnes, you Before she could finish, Nicholas stepped closer to Agnes. “Listen carefully.” He said firmly.  “You’re not welcome here. Not now. Not ever. Leave.”  Agnes’s eyes filled with tears.

“Nicholas, please. I know I hurt you.

I made terrible mistakes, but I’m not here to cause trouble. I just need a place to stay for a while.” Cynthia, still trying to process what was happening, placed a hand on Nicholas’s arm. “Nicholas,  please. Let’s talk about this. She’s been through a lot.” Nicholas shook his head. “No,  Cynthia. This woman doesn’t deserve your kindness. She threw away her family. She doesn’t get a second chance.”  Agnes’s knees weakened and she sank onto the couch, sobbing.

“Cynthia, please. I’ve realized my mistakes. I don’t want to take anything from you or Nicholas. I just I just want to see my daughter again. Please, take care of Juliet. That’s all I ask.” Cynthia looked at her, torn between loyalty and compassion for her old friend. The room was filled with tension. Agnes crying quietly, Nicholas standing stiff and silent, anger burning in his eyes. Before walking away, Nicholas turned and said coldly, “By the time I get back, make sure you’re out of this house.” He stormed upstairs, his footsteps heavy. The silence that followed was painful. Only Agnes’s soft sobs filled the room. Cynthia stood still, her emotions a mix of anger, disappointment, and disbelief.  Finally, she spoke, her voice trembling but firm. “How could you,  Agnes?

How could you be so cruel to your own family? To a man who loved you so deeply? And to your own daughter?”  Agnes buried her face in her hands, unable to look at Cynthia’s angry eyes.

Cynthia’s voice grew louder. “You told me they were dead. You lied to me. You made me believe your husband and daughter died in an accident. Do you know the pain I felt for you? The pity I carried all this time?” Agnes lifted her head slowly, tears streaming down her face. “Cynthia, I’m sorry. I was ashamed of myself and the things I did.

It’s a part of my life I don’t like sharing. That’s why I couldn’t tell you the truth.” Cynthia shook her head in disbelief.

“Ashamed?

That’s your excuse? Do you even understand what you’ve done? The friend I knew, my best friend, would never have done something so heartless.” Agnes cried harder, holding onto the couch for support.

“I know I failed, Cynthia. I failed everyone, Nicholas, Juliet,  and you. But please, believe me when I say I’m truly sorry. I know I don’t deserve forgiveness, but I had nowhere else to turn.” Cynthia crossed her arms, her face hard but her tone softening slightly. “Do you have any idea what you’ve put that little girl through? Juliet has been searching for love, for answers, for closure.  And Nicholas, he was barely holding himself together. You destroyed them, Agnes.”  Agnes nodded weakly. “I know, Cynthia.

Every single day, I live with that guilt.” She wiped her tears, whispering, “Thank you  for even listening to me. I don’t deserve your kindness.” Cynthia looked away, torn between anger and pity. The woman standing before her was no longer the proud, confident friend she once knew, but a broken soul facing the ruins of her own choices.

And as Agnes sat crying quietly, the air in the room grew heavy, a silence filled with regret, pain,  and unfinished forgiveness. Across town, in Nancy’s apartment, the sound of laughter filled the air. Sharon sat cross-legged on the couch, scrolling through her phone. Suddenly, she burst into laughter and almost dropped it.

“Nancy, you need to see this.” Sharon said between giggles. Nancy walked out of the kitchen, drying her hands with a towel. “What is it?”  She asked curiously. Sharon held out her phone, still laughing. “Guess what?  Austin has been arrested.

The mighty Austin, the man who thought he owned the world, is now in jail for drug trafficking.” Nancy’s eyes widened.

“What? Austin arrested? Are you serious?” Sharon nodded, laughing even harder.

“Oh, yes. He thought he could outsmart everyone, but now look at him, behind bars.” Nancy shook her head slowly, a small smirk forming on her lips. “Well, I guess karma is real after all. He absolutely deserves it.” Sharon leaned back, still amused.

“Serves him  right. The only sad part is the money he used to send us.

Such a pity that’s the end.” They both laughed loudly again, unaware that karma had more lessons to teach, and this time,  it was coming for them. Their laughter didn’t last long. A notification suddenly popped up on Sharon’s phone.

Nancy’s eyes caught the name on the screen and her heart dropped.

It was her fiance. “What’s that?” Nancy asked, her voice sharp. Sharon shrugged casually. “Oh, it’s just your fiance. He was asking when we’re meeting again.” >> [clears throat] >> Nancy froze, staring at her. “What do you mean meeting again? Sharon, are you sleeping with my fiance?” Sharon rolled her eyes. “Nancy, don’t make a big deal out of this.

It’s just for fun.” Nancy’s face turned red with anger.

“Fun? You knew we were planning to get married and you still went behind my back to sleep with him.” Sharon stood up sharply. “Oh, please.

Don’t act like you own him. So, you want to get married and leave only Miss Single?” That was the final straw. “Get out of my house, you snake.”  Nancy shouted, her voice trembling. “How dare you?” Sharon laughed coldly. “You’re such a hypocrite, Nancy. When we destroyed Agnes’s home, we laughed about it together. And now you’re crying because you’re about to taste your own medicine.” Their voices grew louder, echoing through the small apartment. Sharon grabbed her bag angrily and stormed toward the door.

“Fine.” She snapped. “Enjoy your perfect little life, what’s left of it.”  The door slammed behind her, leaving Nancy standing alone in silence. Her chest rose and fell heavily as she looked around the empty room, betrayed, heartbroken, and shaking got tea.

Three days later, the afternoon was calm and warm when Cynthia invited Agnes back to their home. She hoped this meeting would finally bring peace, and maybe, just maybe, a little healing. When Agnes arrived, her steps were slow and uncertain. The welcoming atmosphere of the house only made her guilt heavier.

Moments later, Nicholas walked into the living room and froze when he saw her.

His face darkened instantly.

“Cynthia, what is this?” He said sharply. “I told you I don’t want her in this house.”  “Please, Nicholas.” Cynthia said softly, standing between them. “I understand how you feel, but holding onto anger won’t help anyone. Not you, and not Juliet.”  Nicholas’s voice rose. “She abandoned her family, lied, and now she’s here pretending to be a victim? I won’t allow it.” Agnes’s voice trembled as she stepped forward. “Nicholas, I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I’ve carried the weight of my mistakes every single day. I’m not here to stay. I just want to see my daughter, even if it’s only for a little while. Please, that’s all I ask.”  Nicholas began pacing, his hands clenched into fists. Cynthia walked closer to him.

“Nicholas, think about Juliet.” She said gently. “She’s just a child, and she still loves her mother. Forgiveness isn’t about excusing what Agnes did.

It’s about setting yourself free. Do it for Juliet, if not for anyone else.” Nicholas stopped. He took a deep breath and looked at Agnes, then at Cynthia,  who met his gaze with quiet strength.

The room fell silent for a long moment.

Finally, Nicholas spoke, his tone softer. “Agnes, I don’t know if I’ll ever understand why you did what you did,  but for Juliet’s sake, I’ll let go of the anger. You can visit her. I forgive  you.” Agnes’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you, Nicholas. Thank you so much.” Nicholas turned toward the stairs and called out, “Juliet,  come down.” A moment later, Juliet ran down excitedly. Her eyes widened when she saw her mother. “Mommy.” She cried, running straight into her arms. Agnes knelt down and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her face.

“I missed you so much, my baby.” She whispered. Juliet touched her mother’s wet cheeks. “Mommy, don’t cry. I’m here now.” Cynthia and Nicholas watched quietly, their hearts full of mixed emotions.

Cynthia reached for Nicholas’s hand and squeezed it gently. As mother and daughter held each other close, a soft peace filled the room, fragile,  yet real. For the first time in a long while, forgiveness had found its way back into their lives.

The end. Moral lesson. This story reminds us that love isn’t proven when everything is perfect.  It’s proven when life falls apart. Loyalty means staying when it’s easier to walk away, and standing by those who once stood by us.
