“I’m Taking Him To The Concert Instead Of You. He Deserves It More,” She Said About Her Male Best Friend. I’d Bought Her Those Tickets For Her Birthday. I Didn’t Say Anything. Just Waited Until She Left For The Concert. Packed My Things While She Was Gone And Moved Out. She Came Home To An Empty Apartment And A Note: “He Can Have The Tickets. And You.”

Part 3

Grace came home at 12:41. She called at 12:44, breathless and confused. I was at my brother’s house eating cold pizza on an air mattress. She asked where everything was. I said my things were gone. She found the note and asked if I was breaking up over concert tickets. I said no. I was breaking up because she used my love as a resource for another man.

She cried that Ryan had a terrible night because his ex was there with the new guy. The magical healing tickets had not worked. She called me cruel. I told her what was cruel was saying another man deserved her birthday gift from me more than I did.

The next morning, Grace told people I abandoned her because I was jealous of Ryan. Ryan said I had always been controlling. I sent one message to close mutual friends: I bought Grace two concert tickets for her birthday. She told me she was taking Ryan instead because he deserved it more. I moved out. That is the whole story. People reacted fast. One said Grace told them I offered the ticket. No. Another said Ryan paid me back. No. Another said I did not like the artist anyway. I sent the receipt and dinner reservation. By noon, the story changed shape.
