“Don’t Come To Christmas, My Ex Will Be There And I Want To Catch Up,” My Girlfriend Said After I’d Already Planned A Surprise And Bought Her Dream Gift. So I Returned The Gift, Packed My Things And Left. A Day Later, She Called Crying Because Her Ex Brought His Pregnant Fiancée.

Part 2

Anna did not notice until after midnight. Before that, I knew exactly how the evening would go. She would wear the red sweater Dylan once complimented. She would laugh too brightly. She would pretend she did not care whether he noticed. Her mother would give the empty place beside her a look and say nothing.

I spent Christmas Eve at my sister Megan’s house, assembling a toy train for my nephew while my phone buzzed in the kitchen. At 12:18, Anna left a voicemail:

“Where are your things?”

The next message came six minutes later.

“Did you seriously move out because of Christmas?”

Then a third:

“Dylan brought someone.”

I played it on speaker. Anna was crying. Dylan had brought his fiancée. She was pregnant. He wanted everyone to meet her because they were spending the holidays with his family next year. Anna said she did not know. She swore she did not know. She begged me to call.

I did not. Christmas morning, she sent a photo of the empty spot on her dresser where my watch used to sit. Please don’t do this. I replied once: You asked me not to come because you wanted to catch up with him. I respected your request and removed myself from the triangle permanently.
