Over the next weeks, the house began, very slowly, to come back to life.

Nora never announced what she was doing. She just kept doing the things no one had thought to do. She cooked from Maribel’s list, so that every child got the meal their mother had wanted them to have. She helped June with the wetting—not with punishment, which had only made it worse, but with patience, a quiet routine, and the simple message that there was nothing to be ashamed of, until the accidents grew further and further apart. She let Brooke’s hair grow back without comment, and when Brooke finally admitted she’d cut it herself because “Mommy used to braid it and nobody braids it right,” Nora learned to braid it the way the photos showed.

She got the twins to laugh. Real laughing, not the unsettling quiet giggle. It took her a month, and the first time Cora and Mae genuinely laughed—at Nora slipping dramatically on a wet floor she’d just mopped, entirely on purpose—she had to leave the room so they wouldn’t see her cry.

There was a moment with Ivy, too—nine years old, the sharp-eyed one, the one who never quite caused trouble but never quite trusted anyone either—that Nora would carry for years. Nora let him finish. Then she said, quietly, the truest thing she had ever said to anyone:

“You can’t close it, Mr. Whitaker. That’s what I’ve been trying to show your daughters. You can’t bury Maribel by pretending she never existed. You took her photos down and told everyone to stop saying her name, and you thought you were protecting them.” She held his gaze, gently but without backing down. “But your children aren’t sick because they remember their mother. They’re sick because they’re not allowed to. You built a house where the person they loved most got erased, where grief is a secret they get punished for, and then you wondered why they were setting fires and chasing away everyone you sent in.” Her voice softened. “They weren’t trying to destroy the house. They were screaming for their mother in the one place where no one was allowed to say her name.”

Jonathan sat down heavily.

“The fires,” he whispered. “Hazel. The school called about—”

“Hazel built a fire in the playroom last week,” Nora said. “And put it out herself, with me, after she told me she’d lost someone and didn’t know what to do with it. She hasn’t done it since.” She paused. “Your daughter isn’t dangerous, Mr. Whitaker. Your daughter is the same age I was when I lost my little sister, and she’s doing exactly what I did—daring the world to give up on her before it can hurt her. “I’m the one who left,” he said. “Aren’t I. Not the nannies. Me. I’ve been gone twelve hours a day for two years.”

“Yes,” Nora said. She would not lie to him; she had learned that lies were the disease in this house. “You’ve been drowning the same as them. You just had a billion-dollar company to drown in instead of a wastebasket fire.”

Nora was a problem.

So Vivienne did what people like Vivienne do. She came to the house while Jonathan was at work, and she talked to the girls—sweetly, leadingly—and then she went to Jonathan with a story. That she’d found the “housekeeper” overstepping. Filling the children’s heads with things. Manipulating them. Manufacturing a dependency. He let Nora go.

“I don’t want to go,” she whispered, holding all six of them. “I want you to know that. I’m not leaving because I want to. And I need you to remember something, all of you—” She made herself say it steadily, though she was crying too. “Me leaving is not your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong. You hear me? Not one of you did anything wrong. Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes, and this is a grown-up mistake, and it is not yours to carry.”

But she had to go.

Jonathan, standing in the doorway watching his daughters shatter, said nothing. He had been told it was for their own good. He had been frightened into believing the one person who’d healed them was somehow hurting them.

And Nora walked out the gate of the Whitaker mansion, past the security guard who looked at her with something far worse than the pity he’d shown when she arrived, and she became, in the end, the thirty-eighth person to leave that house.
