I Woke Up After Three Years in a Coma and Found My Husband Marrying My Sister—Then a Little Girl Ran to Me and Called Me by Another Name
Part 1
When I opened my eyes, a nurse told me I had been asleep for three years.
My name was Mara Ellison.
I was thirty-one when my car went through a bridge railing during a storm.
Now I was thirty-four, twenty pounds lighter, and surrounded by machines that had kept me alive while everyone else continued living.
“Where is my husband?” I asked.
The nurse looked away.
“Your family requested that all questions be directed to your physician.”
That was the first sign something was wrong.
The second came when I asked for my phone.
There were no messages from Daniel.
No photographs.
No wedding ring on my hand.
My sister Sofia had visited during the first year, the doctor said, but eventually the visits stopped.
Two days later, while the hospital was changing shifts, I found an unattended tablet at the nurses’ station.
I searched Daniel’s name.
The first photograph made my entire body go cold.
Daniel Ellison and Sofia Hart Request the Honor of Your Presence at Their Wedding.
My husband was marrying my younger sister that afternoon.
At our family estate.
I removed the monitor from my finger, dressed in clothes left inside a donation cabinet, and walked out of the hospital before anyone realized I was gone.
The estate was decorated with ivory flowers.
Music floated across the lawn.
Guests turned as I walked through the gate, but no one recognized the thin woman wearing an oversized coat.
Daniel stood beneath the arch in the suit he had worn at our wedding.
Sofia faced him in my mother’s veil.
The officiant was speaking when a little girl near the front row looked at me.
She was about three years old.
Dark curls.
Green eyes.
My eyes.
The child dropped her flower basket.
Then she ran.
She wrapped both arms around my legs and shouted, “Mama Elena!”
Every person at the ceremony fell silent.
I looked down at her.
“My name is Mara.”
The little girl began sobbing.

“No. You’re Mama Elena. You came back.”
Daniel turned around.
The color disappeared from his face.
Sofia gripped her bouquet so tightly that the stems snapped.
“You’re dead,” she whispered.
I stared at my sister.
“Apparently not.”
Two security guards moved toward me.
Sofia raised her voice.
“Lock the gates. Don’t let her leave.”
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mara, you don’t understand.”
“I understand that I woke up alone while you were preparing to marry my sister.”
The little girl clung more tightly to me.
I touched her hair.
“Who is Elena?”
No one answered.
Then an elderly woman rose from the last row.
I recognized her as Daniel’s former housekeeper.
She walked toward me carrying a sealed hospital envelope.
“You were never supposed to wake up,” she said.
Daniel lunged for the envelope.
The woman pulled it away.
“This child is not Sofia’s daughter.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Sofia shouted for security.
The housekeeper looked directly at me.
“Her name is Lily. She was born seven months after your accident.”
I could barely breathe.
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” she said. “What they did to your medical records was impossible.”
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of me lying unconscious in a maternity ward.
And beside my bed stood my sister, holding my newborn baby.
